In the coming weeks a launch committee will be created and effort will be put into confirming a suitable venue and inviting people. This launch will be an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the current issues and needs for the people in DR Congo.

Of all the countries on earth, DR Congo is one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a woman. We’ve met people whose lives have been ruined by this evil. Women who’ve been raped, ruptured and left to die. Families that’ve been torn apart. Children left without parents…

HEAL Africa are doing all that they can to reverse this – with God’s strength behind them. Daily their efforts are helping Congolese women achieve freedom and begin to enjoy the life that God intended for them

A report released this week ‘Silent No More‘ highlights the horrific truth about the numbers of people affected by sexual violence globally. The report urges the church to get involved: to speak out boldly; to act decisively against evil. It’s an inspiring initiative.

Lyn Lusi, co-founder of HEAL Africa (and an unbelievably gracious, mild-mannered, yet powerful warrior for women in DR Congo) helped launch the report in London – along with Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. Read the press release here.

Please take time today to add your name to the global petition to see the world’s churches rise up against sexual violence. Send the link on and get your friends involved in the race to bring justice. It’s not okay to do nothing!

It’s 8 o’clock in the morning. It’s a school day. My wife is busy ironing a clean shirt for our son who is busy eating his porridge and flicking through the pages of his library book. It’s his first year at school and he is still excited about going.

Just add varying levels of calm or chaos to the morning activities and you’ve probably visualised the scene in most Australian homes.

In DR Congo, and many developing world countries, school is not always compulsory, in fact in eastern Congo there is no free public education. In homes that we visited during our recent trip we learnt that in some cases families have between 8 and 10 children, and only 1 child goes to school!

According to a recent news story on the BBC website conflict robs 28 million children worldwide of an education. Conflict has certainly been and continues to be present in many of the lives of people living in DRC. I would add that their failed state has also robbed the children of an education. Without access to state funded education most families are unable to afford to send their children to school. We heard of teachers that hadn’t been paid for months, and saw that the facilities available for teaching were basic and deteriorating.

During our trip we visited a HEAL Africa supported school in the outskirts of Goma that helps provide education to children of the former IDP camps. HEAL invests in their nations future. It’s more than a hospital.
