Last night, over 60 corporate executives, politicians, and other willing volunteers got together for a sleep-over at Hobart’s Grand Chancellor hotel. It was an uncomfortable night; but a fun experience for all, with lasting memories.
No, not another headline grabbing scandal. Now in its second year, ‘Sleeping Out for the Salvos’ drew concerned people – including heads of local industry, the Lord Mayor, MPs and other community leaders – out of the warmth and comfort of their homes to spend the night raising dollars and awareness to help Tasmania’s homeless. Red-beanied volunteers huddled in toe-numbing Hobart cold, to enjoy a performance from the local, Choir of High Hopes. Open discussions on how to tackle today’s distressing level of homelessness brought businesses, pollies and charities together – around warming fires, and later as they braved the overnight wintry chill.
Inspiring. And, the night raised an amazing $102,000! Money that will fund a Salvos street-counsellor, helping hundreds of homeless people in Hobart reintegrate into the community.
